HZDR and Research Instruments: A success story

The Helmholtz-Zentrum Dresden-Rossendorf (HZDR) and the company RI Research Instruments GmbH (RI) from Bergisch Gladbach have officially sealed their long-standing strategic partnership by signing a framework cooperation agreement. The partners aim to jointly develop innovative products and solutions that expand the scientific and technological expertise of both sides and contribute sustainably to progress.

“We are establishing a foundation for a long-term cooperation on equal footing to develop new accelerator technologies – from licensing research results to knowledge and personnel transfer,” emphasizes the Scientific Director of HZDR, Prof. Sebastian M. Schmidt.

The collaboration with Research Instruments dates back 20 years, when the first superconducting radio-frequency (SRF) cavities for the Tesla Test Facility, now European XFEL, were jointly developed and built. “Through the collaboration with HZDR, RI gained the expertise to build complete SRF modules based on the design of the ELBE radiation source at HZDR,” explains Dr. Michael Pekeler, Managing Director of Research Instruments. RI builds these modules under license for smaller laboratories at research institutions worldwide, enabling them to access state-of-the-art technology without having to invest in their own developments. In addition, RI also offers turnkey accelerators for research and industry.
