Capstone Projects Machine Learning for the Natural Sciences
Speakers: Peter Steinbach (Helmholtz-Zentrum Dresden-Rossendorf / Helmholtz AI)
Sebastian Starke and Peter Steinbach of HZDR are both currently giving a lecture course at the Physics Faculty of TUD on „Machine Learning for the Natural Sciences“.
To obtain a certificate of attendance for the course, the students have to conduct a capstone project.
The idea: the students join into teams of 2-4 persons. Each team gets a task from a local research team or alike. The teams have to work on the task with Machine Learning. Each team needs to be provided with a dataset.
The teams will have at minimum 3×90 time to work on the task. If a team decides to invest more, that is up to them and should not be expected.
The results of each capstone project will be presented in a poster session in the last lecture of the semester on Feb 6, 2026, 1-2:30 pm in Andreas-Schubert-Bau Room 328. The poster session will also act as a defense of the project.
If you have a project for the students, please submit a capstone project abstract until Dec 5, 2025, in this Call for Abstracts!
